Crafting Holiday Magic: How to Make Hand-Embroidered Christmas Ornaments

The holiday season is a time for warmth, joy, and creativity. One way to infuse your home with the spirit of the season is by crafting your own hand-embroidered Christmas ornaments! These tiny works of art can be treasured keepsakes, thoughtful gifts, or the perfect addition to your tree’s decorative charm. In this blog, I’ll take you through the steps to create your very own hand-embroidered Christmas ornaments that will add a touch of homemade magic to your holiday decor.

Materials You’ll Need:

Before we dive into the steps, gather your supplies. You’ll need:

  1. Fabric: Choose a fabric with a tight weave like cotton or felt. These materials are easy to work with and provide a nice backdrop for your embroidery. For ornaments, I like to choose fabric with a fun but simple holiday pattern. If it’s too busy it will be hard to see your embroidery work.
  2. Embroidery Hoop: You will need a 3-4 inch embroidery hoop. This helps keep your fabric taut while stitching and makes the stitching process more manageable. It will also provide the frame that you will display your embroidered ornament in! You’ll need one for each ornament you plan to make.
  3. Embroidery Floss: Select an assortment of festive colors. Metallic threads can add a lovely shimmer to your ornaments. I love using DMC threads.
  4. Embroidery Needles: Use fine, sharp embroidery needles for precise stitching.
  5. Scissors: Sharp scissors are important for cutting fabric and thread.
  6. Pattern or Design: You can draw your own design or I also have many stick and stitch patterns that can be shipped directly to you. I also have ornament packs that are specifically designed for 4 inch embroidery ornaments. This method is hassle-free and allows you to stick the pattern directly onto your ornament and stitch. Afterwards, you just wash it off with water.
  7. Polyfill or Batting: If you plan on stuffing the ornaments.
  8. Ribbon or String: To create loops for hanging your ornaments and decorative bows.

Steps to Create Hand-Embroidered Christmas Ornaments:

  1. Design Your Ornaments: Begin by sketching your ornament designs on the fabric using a pencil or fabric marker. You can opt for classic holiday symbols like snowflakes, holly leaves, Christmas trees, or get creative with your own ideas. (You can also use my ready-made stick and stitch patterns)
  2. Prepare Your Fabric: If you’re using thin fabric, consider adding iron-on interfacing to the back to give it extra stability. (If you are using my stick and stitch patterns, this comes built in.)
  3. Choose Your Colors: Select the embroidery floss colors that match your design. Remember to separate the strands (most embroidery floss comes in six-strand skeins) and use as many or as few strands as you like for different effects.
  4. Thread Your Needle: Thread your embroidery needle with the floss and tie a knot at the end.
  5. Start Stitching: Now, it’s time to embroider your design! There are several stitches to choose from, such as the backstitch, satin stitch, or French knots. Experiment with different stitches to create texture and dimension in your ornaments.
  6. Add Details: To make your ornaments more festive, consider adding beads, sequins, or even tiny jingle bells to your embroidery. These embellishments can add a touch of sparkle and whimsy.
  7. Assemble the Ornaments: Once your embroidery is complete, place the embroidered fabric right side up in the hoop and use running stitch to tie up the excess fabric on the back of your hoop.
  8. Add a Bow & Hanging Loop: Cut a piece of ribbon or string, create a bow around the hoop hardware and then loop it up through the hardware creating a loop to hang the ornament.
  9. Repeat and Decorate: Repeat these steps for as many ornaments as you desire. You can create coordinated sets or go for a mix of designs and colors.

Display and Share Your Creations:

Once you’ve completed your hand-embroidered Christmas ornaments, they are ready to adorn your tree, gift to loved ones, or even hang as decorative accents throughout your home. These charming ornaments are not only a delightful addition to your holiday decor but also a reflection of the love and creativity you pour into your crafting. Each stitch is a labor of love, and every finished ornament is a testament to your dedication and creativity. Happy crafting, and may your holidays be filled with warmth and joy!
